The Future of Work is Diversity
Map of the world

LD Talent is a future-of-work network of developers, data scientists, and designers. Our diverse talent comes from all over the world, including overlooked geographies. They are vetted for experience, reliability, and motivation, and are financially incentivized to engage in lifelong learning.

To convince clients of the strengths of our talent, LD pays for the first few hours of work, and offers transparent budget control through half hour Slack based work sessions. This lets talent communicate and be recognized for tangible deliverables (i.e. code commits, design updates). Such meritocracy builds trust between clients and their hires to the point where they want to bring the talent on full time.

The story behind LD Talent

Since 2014, while at Stanford, Gobi Dasu noticed the high demand for qualified developers, the quality problems with online freelance engineering, and the high attrition rates in massive online open courses (MOOCs).

After a number of experiments, in 2018 he launched an effective business model to address these problems with one platform.

LD Talent is an endeavor not just in engineering, education, and incentives, but also in meaningful economic uplift and meeting industry's demand for talent.

Our secret sauce is financially incentivized education of talent in our network, which lets us match you with quality engineers and designers at competitive prices. Our goal is to solve the Computer Science skill gap. Industry wants the best and brightest talent but stigmatizes the need for lifelong learning and growth. We have a culture where learning is embraced, and our training and vetting funnels bespeak these values.

Extrinsic vs. Intrinsic motivation

Literature from the learning sciences and development economics describes CCT programs. Such “learn to earn” models aim to financially incentivize education and tackle global wealth inequality. As an extension, LD has developed a concept called Industry-driven Educational Conditional Cash Transfer in order to create a constant supply of productive and skilled talent. To meet our goal of closing STEM skill gaps, we incentivize talent to constantly upskill themselves, and their learnings are posted on our blog every month. In general, our social enterprise hopes to address inequalities by paying people to learn in-demand skills and even entrepreneurship, and achieving profits and scale when those people seize market opportunities.

While money may seem like an extrinsic motivator, it turns out that such financial boosts can incentivize knowledge workers, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, to engage in lifelong learning. As they learn more and advance in their careers, the extrinsic component reduces and the intrinsic grows. So, we embrace with pride the fact that LD stands for "Learning Dollars". It represents the wealth of learning, and is a concept that can be translated into many languages and cultures.
